Adrian Newey has revealed that he is keeping his options open when it comes to his future after being linked with a move away from Red Bull. Newey is arguably the greatest technical mastermind in F1 history and has been designing Red Bull’s cars since joining the team in 2005.
The 65-year-old has played an influential role in shaping Red Bull’s recent dominance after nailing the widespread regulation changes that were introduced in 2022. However, it has been speculated that he could decide to look for a new challenge amid the internal turmoil which has cast a dark cloud over the team this season.
Earlier this month, reports suggested that Aston Martin had presented a significant offer to Newey in an attempt to lure him away from Red Bull. Ferrari have also been linked with a potential move for the 62-year-old ahead of Lewis Hamilton‘s arrival next year.
Quizzed on his future at the Japanese Grand Prix, Newey admitted that he was still eager to be involved in F1 but stopped short of devoting himself to Red Bull for the rest of his career.
“I enjoy it,” he told RacingNews365. “Ever since I was 10 or so, certainly by 12, I wanted to be a designer. I don’t think I knew the word ‘engineer’.
“[I want to stay] in motor racing and ideally in Formula One. That’s what I [put] all my teenage years towards. I managed to get that first job in motor racing when I graduated. I’ve hugely enjoyed it and I continue to enjoy it.
“So, I think as long as I continue to enjoy it and the team wants me then I’ll continue to do it for the moment and then we’ll have to see in the future. I don’t tend to plan too far forward.”
Newey has previously expressed an interest in teaming up with Hamilton, a dream which could become a reality if Ferrari decide to come calling. He discussed the possibility of a move to Maranello back in 2014 but nothing came of it, explaining later in his autobiography that the culture within Red Bull inspired him to stay.
During an appearance on the Beyond The Grid podcast last year, Newey admitted: “Working with Fernando [Alonso] and Lewis would have been fabulous, but it never happened. It’s just circumstance sometimes. That’s the way it is.”
