An appliance expert has shared a step-by-step guide to expertly cleaning a washing machine.
It comes as a new study from appliance brand AEG has found that 59 percent of Britons are not cleaning their machine as often as recommended, with 21 percent never doing so.
Michael Forbes, product specialist at AEG, said: “Generally, a maintenance wash should be done at least once a month to keep the machine in the best possible condition and ensure clothes come out looking their best.”
The expert also shared five tell-tale signs that signal your washing machine is overdue a deep clean.
Unpleasant smells, black residue on the door seal, leftover detergent marks, chalky deposits in the drum and clothes coming out dirty from the machine are all signs your machine needs a deep clean.

1. Run a hot wash cycle
A simple hot wash, often known as a maintenance wash, involves selecting the highest temperature wash cycle on the machine and adding a specialised cleaner to the machine’s drum.
2. Remove the detergent drawer
After the hot wash cycle has finished, remove the detergent drawer and rinse it with warm soapy water. This can be done in the sink, in a washing-up bowl or the bath.
3. Clean the detergent cavity
Next, clean the detergent cavity using a damp cloth and warm soapy water. Wipe down the inside area where the drawer slides into.
4. Clean the drum
Use a cloth to wipe down the drum of the washing machine, making sure to clean the entire surface area to remove any leftover residue.
5. Clean the rubber seal
Use your hand to gently check for any items of debris inside the rubber cavity, these can include loose change, buttons, hair clips, and hair.
Next, wipe down the seal using a damp cloth on both the outside and inside.
6. Replace the detergent drawer
Then, slide the detergent drawer back into its opening and wipe down the exterior of the machine.
7. Run a second hot wash
Finally, run another hot wash cycle without any detergent or cleaning solution. This will prepare and reset the machine for the next clothes wash and remove any remaining residue.
