Arsenal given big scare before Man City title test as Mikel Arteta left sweating | Football | Sport

Arsenal have been struck by their latest injury scare in the build-up to next weekend’s mammoth Premier League clash against Manchester City. Brazil have confirmed that Gabriel has withdrawn from Dorival Junior’s squad for the nation’s upcoming friendly fixtures due to an unspecified issue.

Gabriel Martinelli had already withdrawn from Brazil duty after suffering a foot injury during Arsenal’s 6-0 win at Sheffield United at the start of the month.

On Monday, the Brazilian FA confirmed that Gabriel had joined the 22-year-old on the sidelines and will miss the meetings against England and Spain this month.

Junior has called upon Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer to replace him amid an impressive season in Italy, which has prompted links to Manchester United.

“I had already communicated previously that we will work with a slightly more extensive list”, Junior explained this afternoon.

“A pre-call — we can put it that way — and again, today, we had another casualty. Unfortunately, Gabriel Magalhaes is uncalled. In his place, we are calling Bremer from Juventus.”

Gabriel has earned six caps for Brazil after receiving his maiden call-up last year for 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta will be sweating over the fitness of the 26-year-old, who has been among his best players in a promising season.

The Gunners are top of the Premier League but are level on points with Liverpool and just one ahead of reigning champions and favourites Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in 13 days in a fixture that could crucially shift the momentum in the title race.

Gabriel has formed a formidable partnership with William Saliba, and reports suggest there is hope that he will be able to feature against City.

The Mail claim that Gabriel’s withdrawal from Brazil duty is not due to a serious injury and the problem has been described as ‘not too bad’.
