Independiente del Valle are set to receive around £15.7million from Chelsea despite the Blues not buying a player from them, according to reports. Chelsea have been the Premier League‘s biggest spenders over the last few years, having splashed more than £1billion on transfers since Todd Boehly took control at Stamford Bridge.
The west Londoners spent a huge chunk of money on Moises Caicedo from Brighton, with the 22-year-old moving for a fee in the region of £115m last summer. The deal marked a British record and is set to see his former club Independiente del Valle receive a healthy payout despite not being directly involved in the transfer.
Independiente del Valle are due payments further down the line through FIFA’s solidarity scheme, which ensures that clubs receive a portion of future transfer fees for players they have developed. According to Bolavip, the Ecuadorian outfit are entitled to around £15.7m from Caicedo’s big-money move to Chelsea.
It is said that plans have already been drawn up to invest that money in a number of different projects. Just shy of £5.5m is said to have been allocated to the construction of youth training centres in Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo, which are already under construction.
The rest of the money is thought to have been reserved for spending on new players in a ‘considerable increase’ to their usual transfer budget. Meanwhile, another club in Ecuador, Espoli de Santo Domingo, will pocket around £785,000 having trained Caicedo earlier in his career.
Chelsea’s decision to spend big on Caicedo has certainly been a positive for his former clubs, who have all been compensated for developing him in the past. However, the Blues’ wild transfer strategy has raised fears that they could be on course to break Premier League spending rules this summer.
Just last week, Chelsea recorded a pre-tax loss of £90m for the accounting period ending 2022/23. That loss, as well as a £121.3m loss in 2022 and a £60m loss after tax in 2021, means the Blues have lost a total of £271.4m over the last three reporting periods.
In a statement that accompanied the financial results, Chelsea said: “Despite the loss in the year and the continued fallout from the sanctions placed on the club in the prior year [related to Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club], the club continues to comply with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations.”
