Dozens of dead wild animals dumped outside Hampshire shop | Hampshire

A police investigation has been launched after dozens of dead animals were left outside a shop in Broughton.

The Broughton community shop in Hampshire said it was “shocked” to discover the bodies of about 50 dead hares, as well as a barn owl and a kestrel outside on Friday.

“Safe to say none of us were expecting our day to start as it did here this morning,” the volunteer-run shop posted on Facebook. “Thank you all for popping in, messaging and phoning to make sure we are OK. We are OK, shocked but OK.”

Police were called at about 6am on Friday and were trying to identify the owners of a silver Suzuki Grand Vitara. The shop has requested CCTV footage from the surrounding area in the early hours of the morning.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight police said: “The animals have been collected and an investigation is under way.”.

The shop’s treasurer, Mike Hensman, told the BBC the discovery had been “devastating” for the workers. Blood was smeared on the windows, and the barn owl and kestrel were “stuffed” on the door handles, Hensman told the PA Media news agency.

“One of our guys who comes in the morning to get the papers and open the shop found them,” Hensman said. “He’s a guy who has been around a bit, he shoots, and he was quite taken aback when he saw all this mess and carnage.

“The rest of the team came in to hose it all down and get rid of all the bodies. People say: ‘Oh, it’s a warning’; I don’t know what it is.”
