Electric car owners given ‘game-changer’ tip that can increase range in seconds

The online vehicle seller BigWantsYourCar.com has offered tips that can help electric vehicle owners get the best possible range out of their car.

With more than a million electric cars on the UK roads, and companies announcing a selection of ultra-affordable new models, many motorists are adjusting to the different driving style when compared to a petrol or diesel alternative.

Darren Miller, car expert at BigWantsYourCar.com, suggested that one of the most effective ways of increasing an electric cars range is by using Eco Mode.

He advised: “Eco Mode in electric vehicles is a game-changer for drivers seeking to optimise their driving experience. By activating this feature, drivers can significantly extend their vehicle’s range, adding 10 to 15 miles.

“It’s a straightforward yet powerful tool that prioritises energy conservation over speed or power, making it ideal for everyday driving scenarios.”

Whilst not all electric vehicles will have this feature, the vast majority of the latest models allow owners to select a certain driving mode, with one focusing on offering a slightly increased range.

The expert noted that this can be achieved by reducing the amount of power available and making the throttle response smoother, meaning minor alterations are less likely to affect how the motor is running.

However, BigWantsYourCar.com noted that this driving mode may not be ideal for all motorists, as the predictable driving style could speed up driver fatigue, increasing the risk of accidents.

Darren also suggested that there are many ways in which drivers can preserve the life of their vehicle’s battery, such as by only charging it up to 80 percent.

He continued: “Aim to charge up to 80 percent at fast chargers, as charging speed significantly slows down after reaching this level. This approach ensures efficient use of your time and maintains battery health.

“By optimising your charging strategy, you minimise downtime and maximise driving time, allowing you to reach your destination faster and with minimal interruption.”

Finally, Darren recommended that motorists thinking about using an electric car for a long journey should plan their route around chargers, giving them peace of mind that they will not go flat whilst on the road.

He added: “Having backup charging plans is essential for a stress-free long-distance drive. Be flexible with your stops if your preferred charging station is unavailable or occupied. Preparedness ensures a smooth journey, allowing you to easily navigate unexpected challenges.

“By having alternative charging options, you mitigate the risk of delays and maintain confidence in your ability to complete your journey.”
