Fernando Alonso has officially signed a new multi-year contract with Aston Martin, meaning he will not be joining Mercedes or Red Bull next season. The Spaniard had been at the centre of speculation linking him with a move elsewhere but has decided to commit himself to Aston Martin for the foreseeable future.
Alonso’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of this season, leading to plenty of questions about where he would be driving in 2025. Mercedes were said to have been weighing up a move for the 42-year-old to replace Lewis Hamilton, who will leave the Silver Arrows to join Ferrari next year.
Red Bull were also linked with Alonso earlier this month, with Sergio Perez only tied down until the end of 2024 and Max Verstappen rumoured to be facing uncertainty over his own future. However, it has been revealed that Alonso will be staying at Aston Martin next season after signing a new multi-year contract with the Silverstone outfit.
Team principal Mike Krack explained that Alonso’s new deal will keep him at the team into 2026, when they will enter into a works engine partnership with Honda.
“Securing Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin is fantastic news,” said Krack. “We have built a strong working relationship over the last 18 months and we share the same determination to see this project succeed.
“We have been in constant dialogue over the last few months and Fernando has been true to his word. When he decided he wanted to continue racing, he talked to us first. Fernando has shown he believes in us and we believe in him.
“Fernando is hungry for success, driving better than ever, is fitter than ever, and is completely dedicated to making Aston Martin a competitive force.
“This multi-year agreement with Fernando takes us into 2026 when we begin our works power unit partnership with Honda. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success together.”
Alonso’s new deal will extend his stay at Aston Martin into a third season and beyond, having moved across from Alpine at the end of 2022. He currently sits eighth in the Drivers’ Championship standings after picking up 24 points in the opening four races of the campaign.
