Margot Robbie to produce ‘blockbuster’ Monopoly movie with Hasbro | Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie is set to partner with Hasbro for a new film based on the board game Monopoly.

The Oscar-nominated star of Barbie will help to shepherd the long-gestating project to the screen with her production company LuckyChap and Lionsgate.

In a statement, LuckyChap called it “a top property – pun fully intended” while Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson said the company is “tremendously excited” to work on what they believe will be Robbie’s “next blockbuster”.

Formed in 2014, LuckyChap has been behind films such as I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman and Saltburn as well as TV shows such as Maid and Dollface. The company’s aim is to “expand what female stories and female storytellers could do” in Hollywood.

LuckyChap’s record-breaking 2023 smash Barbie made over $1.4bn at the global box office and was nominated for eight Oscars. The company’s recent comedy My Old Ass premiered at Sundance to positive reviews and was picked up by Amazon for release.

Robbie and her producing partners, including husband Tom Ackerley, are also set to make R-rated Christmas comedy Naughty with director Olivia Wilde. Last month it was also revealed that LuckyChap would be bringing long-running video game The Sims to the screen.

There have been numerous attempts to turn Monopoly into a movie over the years. In 2008, Ridley Scott was briefly attached to create a comedy based around a Donald Trump-esque tycoon. In 2019, Kevin Hart was then set as lead with Tim Story directing. It remains unclear as to what the new version will look like.

The news was revealed during this year’s CinemaCon, a gathering of exhibitors and stars in Las Vegas. Lionsgate also announced today that a new take on The Blair Witch Project was also in the works with horror hitmakers Blumhouse involved.
