Paint colours to avoid that make homes look ‘outdated and smaller’ – puts off buyers too

has always been one of the easiest and most impactful design tricks in the book – and for good reason.

However, painting the can be an overwhelming task and can feel like a huge chore.

Before painting anywhere around the home, there are so many colours, combinations, and finishes to choose households have to choose from.

While there’s no right or wrong way to decorate a home, there’s also no harm in turning to a few experts to help – especially for those planning on selling up soon.

That’s why Express.co.uk have turned to and founder of Arsight Artem Kropovinsky, to determine some of the worst interior paint colours.

1. Bright yellow

It may be sunny and reflect happiness, but the first paint colour Artem recommends households “steer clear of” is bright yellow.

He claimed that this colour can “make a space look too rigid and old-fashioned”, in contrast with modern design styles that emphasise subtlety and depth.

Plus, bright yellow will be off-putting to buyers as it is generally a distracting shade, taking the gaze away from the rest of the room.

2. Dark browns

While many households are fans of certain brown shades, the designer recommends “avoiding” his colour.

He claimed that this shade is frequently thought of as a “nuance that was present in outdated, massive furniture pieces”.

He added: “This shade can make the area look smaller and less welcoming by taking away from modern airy style.”

3. Beige

Similarly to dark brown, Artem claims that households should “skip outdated beiges”.

He said: “Former mainstays of neutrality, these colours are now paragons for blandness that makes inert spaces lethargic with no dynamism of the latest vogues.”

4. Neon greens

Aside from yellows and browns, the interior designer recommended “dodging” neon greens.

While they may produce an uncanny or even creepy atmosphere, and it is “quite hard to get them in tune with modern interior design trends” which prefer naturalistic colours.
