Storm Kathleen: Full list of worst hit areas in the UK | Weather | News

A storm is set to hit the UK this weekend, bringing with it heavy rain and winds of up to 70mph.

Storm Kathleen will hit the west of England, Scotland and Wales as well as all of Northern Ireland on Saturday and Sunday. It is the 11th storm to be named this season, which equals the record set in 2015/16.

Kathleen will follow behind Storm Olivia (named by the Portuguese weather service), which will bring showers tomorrow. On Saturday, a deeper area of low pressure will arrive from the southwest with high winds and heavy rain.

The southeast should miss the worst of it with temperatures to hit 21C. This would be the highest temperature of 2024 so far.

The storm will hit Plymouth, Swansea, Conwy, Windermere, Carlisle, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Isle of Arran. All of Northern Ireland will be covered by the storm.

Winds will be 50mph widely, according to the Met Office, but will reach up to 70mph in exposed places. There will also be large waves on some coasts.

The Met Office said the high winds could cause a small risk of danger to life and injuries and could cause travel disruption, power cuts and road closures.

Temperatures are forecast to be around 15C along the west coast. Elsewhere it will be slightly warmer, with 19C forecast for Hull, 20C for Norwich, and 19C for Canterbury.

Today will see heavy rain clear southern England through the morning followed by sunny spells and scattered showers, while conditions will be cloudier for Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland with some hill snow in the Highlands.

Tonight:

Wet and windy weather will move north and east across all but the Northern Isles overnight. Snow affecting high ground in Scotland. Clearer, with blustery showers in the southwest later.

Friday:

Rain clearing eastwards, though lingering across parts of the north, with further hill snow here. Warm sunshine developing across England and Wales, though with showers for a time. Generally windy.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Rain clearing to sunshine and showers on Saturday. Very windy, with gales in places. Another day of sunshine and blustery showers on Sunday. Some more general rain possible on Monday.
