WhatsApp adds new ‘highly requested’ feature that’s coming to your phone soon

WhatsApp is rolling out a new chat filter tool that you should get on your phone “in the coming week” according to the firm. Three filter buttons will appear in the app above your chat list that will let you filter your messages between ‘All’, ‘Unread’, and ‘Groups’.

WhatsApp said the addition of the Groups tab in particular was a “highly requested feature”.

“[N]ow all your group chats will be organised in one place, making it easier to find your favourite ones whether it’s your weekly family dinner discussion or planning your next vacation. This will also show subgroups of Communities,” the company said in a press release.

“We believe filters will make it easier for people to stay organised and find their most important conversations and help navigate through messages more efficiently. We’ll continue to build more options to help you focus on what matters most.”

Currently, all your WhatsApp chats are stacked in one huge list, ordered by recency with the latest activity at the top. That will still be how things are ordered, but now you can choose to filter the unread messages – handy if you’ve been putting replying to people and want to see whose message is waiting.

Filtering by groups is also useful as you may have a few you want to chime in on or check, but until now you’d have to scroll through a long list of other chats while trying to find it. Now all your groups can be found in one place. You might also want to take the opportunity to finally archive that ‘Alicante stag 2022’ chat.

We can’t see the update on our phones yet at Express.co.uk but we have still got the capital letters for the ‘Online’ and ‘Typing’ status indicators that have got to people this week. WhatsApp says it’s reversing that change, though.
