Car mechanic unveils little-known garage ‘con’ with petrol and diesel owners under threat

Scotty highlighted the worrying problem on his YouTube channel where he gives almost daily advice to road users.

Scotty explained: “Today I’m going to show you a common scam that mechanics pull on their customers.

“Do you see all of these rubber hoses? They’re vacuum lines. They take intake vacuum pressure from the engine. It’s a sealed system with vacuum pressure that sucks in.

“So if a mechanic pulls under here, takes out one of the little hoses it’ll suck air and run poorly.

“It can make your check engine light come on because the engine will be running too lean, it has too much air that it is sucking in and not enough fuel.

“It can make your engine idle poorly, you can have a lack of acceleration, especially at lower speeds.

“The faster you go that little won’t mean too much and you can run okay at highway speeds

“So make sure all the hoses are plugged in and when it’s idling listen for a sucking sound and when you bet there you’ll probably see a hose has been unplugged.”

Motorists were quick to jump onto the comments section, both praising Scotty for his advice and calling out the bad mechanics who were terrorising drivers.

@woodie70hudson87 posted: “This is Scotty teaching us how to avoid ‘scumbag’ mechanics!”

@jessieomorton4219 reacted: “You’re the best, a little knowledge can save you a lot of money, thanks a lot Scotty.”

@The_Gallowglass wrote: “I think the last time I took my car to the mechanic for some annoying front-end work, they were gonna charge me an arm and leg so I told them, ‘Nah, thanks, I’ll just do it myself’.”

@kimberlydubois7453 simply added: “Frightening.”
