Sonos issues important update as users threaten to ditch their speakers


It’s been a torrid few months for owners of popular Sonos speakers with many suffering major issues after the famous audio firm released a significant update to its smartphone app. Since rolling out the upgrade back in May, Sonos owners have complained of numerous issues including playlists not working, devices not connecting and the whole experience becoming unstable and almost unusable.

Some have even gone as far as to consider selling their entire speaker setup and switching to rival systems such as Apple’s HomePods.

“I’ve actually never seen anything NOT work like your app in my lifetime. It’s so frustrating I want to sell all of my Sonos speakers,” said one user named Billy in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Another frustrated owner called Robin added: “This is insane. After three Updates, still, nothing works. I can’t play my playlists on Apple Music, the radio works randomly, and the app is still extremely slow. This is absolutely unacceptable! I will now sell all my Sonos speakers and switch to Apple. Enough is enough.”

The issues are so widespread and so bad that Sonos CEO Patrick Spence has now sent out an official update to apologise and explain how things are getting back on track.

“We know that too many of you have experienced significant problems with our new app which rolled out on May 7, and I want to begin by personally apologizing for disappointing you,” Spence said.

“We developed the new app to create a better experience, with the ability to drive more innovation in the future, and with the knowledge that it would get better over time. However, since launch we have found a number of issues. Fixing these issues has delayed our prior plan to quickly incorporate missing features and functionality.”

The Sonos boss says that the firm is now releasing bug fixes every two weeks in a bid to bring things back to normal and make its music system usable again.

“Since May 7, we have released new software updates approximately every two weeks, each making significant and meaningful improvements,” Spence added.

An official timeline of upgrades has also been announced which will hopefully fix all the current bugs in the new Sonos app although it appears some issues won’t be addressed until October.

July and August:

• Improving the stability when adding new products

• Implementing Music Library configuration, browse, search, and play

August and September:

• Improving Volume responsiveness

• User interface improvements based on customer feedback

• Improving overall system stability and error handling

September:

• Improving Alarm consistency and reliability

September and October:

• Restoring edit mode for Playlists and the Queue

• Improving functionality in settings
