Six paint colours to avoid as they are ‘off-putting’ to home buyers

Spring is an ideal time to put a house on the market as the brighter and longer days make house viewings a more pleasant experience.

When it comes to selling your home for the best price, there are numerous factors to consider, including the paint colours on the walls.

Home remodelling experts Fixr conducted a Paint and Colour Trends report for 2024 that highlighted certain colours that potential home-buyers are likely to find “off-putting”.

According to the results, 53 percent of respondents would be put off a home if it featured the colour red.

While red accent features may add a touch of romance to interiors, a whole wall covered in red is seemingly a big no-no.

Another paint colour worth avoiding in the home is lime green – around 53 percent of survey respondents couldn’t stand the look of the colour.

This one may be controversial – especially for those of a sunny disposition – but yellow was also frowned upon.

To be particular, it was bright yellow that 40 percent of respondents had a problem with, and 19 percent didn’t like mustard yellow.

Upsetting around 10 percent of respondents was the colour pink while nine percent were not a fan of turquoise.

Expert paint suppliers Tikkurila recommend neutral paint colours for maximum appeal when selling your home.

In their paint collection, Feather F487 is recommended, which is a “soft and delicate pale grey”.

The other options include Halva G459, which is a warm neutral beige, and Mulberry H484, which is a warm off-white that has grey undertones.

Tikkurila noted: “Try to keep your home as open and neutral as possible to maximise appeal to a potential buyer.

“You want buyers to be able to envision living there and not be focused on styles which do not match their own.”

More bold colours are best kept as accent colours, which may be shown in detailing on a cushion, for example.
