Snooker star Luca Brecel has car towed and nearly missed £60k final | Other | Sport

Luca Brecel revealed that his car was towed upon arrival for the World Mixed Doubles final on Sunday. The world champion and Reanne Evans defeated Mark Selby and Rebecca Kenna 4-2 to claim the title and a cool £60,000 cash prize, but Brecel’s day did not go completely to plan.

The Belgian Bullet admitted that he had parked in the wrong area and his car was subsequently towed. He then had to travel and pick his vehicle up, coming close to missing the final as a result of the incident.

Brecel was nearly late to team up with 12-time world champion Evans and continue his improved form, getting one over on Selby and Kenna after his earlier mishap. Brecel’s campaign had a stuttering start but he is in form at the right time, even though his parking was punished.

“I parked my car in the wrong place and it got taken away, so I had to go and get it just before the final and then just about made it back in time,” he told ITV. “Crazy story. But luckily, I made it in time.

“I started off well and played a bit better than before, but not as good as I would have liked. It was still good enough to win, but I’m still not happy with the way we played. I guess Reanne will say the same, but I’m really happy to win this great tournament. I was already feeling much better in my game the last few months and winning this title helps a lot. Now I’m now really looking forward to Sheffield (for the World Snooker Championship).”

Brecel’s doubles partner Evans joked that she would have towed his car if it spurred on such a performance. She thanked the world No. 4 for his efforts in their final and admitted that he “carried” her to victory after another impressive display from Brecel.

“(It’s) most definitely (special) – 22 years to play on TV and win a final,” Evans added. “I know Luca carried me a little bit, and if I had known, I’d have towed his car right at the start of yesterday if he played like that.
