A Victorian-era fort located on its own private island in Kent’s River Medway is scheduled to be auctioned next month, with a surprisingly low guide price of just £50,000. The historic structure, once built for military defense, now stands as a unique property opportunity due to its rare setting and distinctive heritage. 

Its sale has attracted attention not only because of the fort’s age and character but also because owning an entire island at such a modest price is highly unusual, making it a potentially remarkable purchase for history enthusiasts or investors. Fort Darnet, a 19th-century military installation located on a secluded island near Hoo in Kent’s River Medway, is set to be auctioned by Savills on December 10. 

This marks the first time in forty years that the historic fort has been made available for purchase, offering a rare chance to own a unique piece of British military heritage.

Accessible only by boat or kayak, the site provides an unusual opportunity for those seeking a private island retreat away from modern-day noise and activity. 

Originally constructed between 1870 and 1872 by the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom, the fort was built to safeguard the naval dockyard at Chatham, underscoring its strategic importance in Britain’s coastal defenses.

Ben Fletcher from Savills Auctions said the fort will attract plenty of interest when it goes to auction. "The sale of Darnet Fort presents a unique and rare opportunity to acquire a piece of British military history," he said. "We are excited to be bringing this landmark to our final auction of the year."

He added: "We anticipate strong levels of interest when it goes under the hammer in December from those keen to preserve its historic integrity, or simply drawn to the uniqueness of owning such a rare and individual structure."

The fort is currently recognized as a protected Scheduled Monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act of 1979, ensuring its preservation as part of Britain’s heritage.

Architecturally, it stands out with a circular design consisting of two levels: an open upper platform and a lower tier equipped with gun points that historically defended against enemy ships.

Although the structure remains in fair condition, the lower magazine level has become partially submerged over time, reflecting the challenges of maintaining such an isolated site.

Interestingly, the island once served as a popular destination for picnics and leisure activities, particularly up until the 1980s, adding a social dimension to its military past.
