A man who stabbed another man to death and seriously injured two others was dramatically arrested at gunpoint in the street before later being found guilty of murder at Bristol Crown Court. Kane Kotwica, 39, of Bibury Road in Gloucester, killed 53-year-old Matthew Cainey during a violent attack inside a flat on Bedford Street on May 28 this year. After the incident, he fled the property and was arrested nearby by armed officers who ordered him to lie face-down on the road.

Footage released after the trial shows officers stopping their unmarked car at the junction of Painswick Road and Chequers Road. One officer can be heard saying “There he is” before shouting: “Armed police, get down on the floor now!” Kotwica, wearing his hood up, lies on the tarmac with his arms stretched out as officers tell him not to move.

The court heard that Kotwica had been inside the flat earlier that morning with Mr Cainey, two other men and two women.

He argued with one of the men and grabbed a kitchen knife, but the weapon was taken from him by one of the women, who told him to leave.

He remained in the surrounding area for almost an hour and a half before returning to the property with another knife hidden in his hoody pocket.

When the door was opened by Mr Cainey and one of the women, Kotwica produced the knife and stabbed Mr Cainey once in the chest. The wound proved fatal.

The two men tried to restrain him but both suffered serious injuries. One man was stabbed in the chest and needed life-saving surgery, while the other received a significant neck wound.

A doorbell camera from a neighbouring flat captured the moment Kotwica carried out the attack, and the footage was shown to jurors.

CCTV later recorded him throwing the knife down a drain before he was arrested. The weapon was subsequently recovered.

Kotwica denied murder and denied attempting to murder the two surviving victims, claiming he acted in self-defence.

A unanimous jury rejected his account and found him guilty of murdering Mr Cainey. He was found not guilty of attempted murder but guilty of two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent.

Detective Inspector Adam Stacey from the Major Crime Investigation Team said Kotwica carried out a deliberate and devastating attack.

He said: “Kane Kotwica is a very dangerous and violent individual whose pre-meditated cowardly attack has robbed a family of their loved one and caused serious injury to two others.

“My thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Matthew, who have shown incredible dignity throughout all of this.”

In a statement, Mr Cainey’s family said: “As a family we are heartbroken that this has happened. This is not how any life should end.

“Dad was always such a happy and cheeky man who loved his family and friends so much.

“He was always there for the people he cared about, and that showed when his friends were there for him during the trial.”

Kotwica has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday, December 10.
