The UK is set to be hit with blizzards and freezing temperatures in a fortnight. Forecaster WXCharts is expectingwintery weather to arrive on January 3, bringing snow and lows of -9C.

There will be snow as far south as Norwich, with it also hitting Nottingham, Leeds, Middlesbrough, and Durham in England. In Scotland, the snow will hit Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Wick. The snow will be deepest in the Cairngorms, where it will be up to 10cm. East Scotland will see between 5cm and 9cm of snow.

The rest of Scotland will only see between 1cm and 4cm. The northeast of England will see depths of between 6cm and 8cm, surrounding regions will get 1cm to 5cm.

Nottingham, Derby, Hull, Norwich, Ipswich, and Thanet will see only 1cm to 2cm. It will be coldestin the Cairngorms at -9C, with most of Scotland (Inverness, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh) between -4C and -8C.

Northern Ireland (Derry, Belfast) will be between 0C and -3C. Wales (Conwy, Aberystwyth, Cardiff) will be between -2C and -5C. The north of England (Newcastle, Cumbria, Manchester, Leeds) will be between -3C and -7C.

The Midlands (Birmingham, Reading) and the south west (Plymouth, Bristol) will be between -4C and -1C. East Anglia (Norwich, Ipswich) and the south east (London, Brighton) will be between 0-C and -1C.

Separately, the Met Office said of the period: “Whilst there will be a fair amount of dry weather, a few showers will still be possible, particularly across eastern and southern parts which may be wintry in places, more especially over high ground.

“Temperatures will be below average much of the time, with frost likely where clear skies and light winds prevail.

“High pressure will probably be close to the UK, perhaps most likely centred to the west, and whilst this may allow relatively settled and dry conditions with a risk of frost and fog.”

The Met Office previously explained it is challenging to forecast snow in the UK, especially weeks in advance.

Today: Any isolated mist and fog across southern and central areas slowly clearing, leaving a bright and mostly dry day with a few showers. Cloud and rain spreading into the west later where it becomes increasingly windy. Temperatures near average.

Tonight: A band of rain will move into the southwest and Wales, becoming slow moving in places. Mostly dry elsewhere, some rain in the southeast moving northwards. Windy in the north.

Sunday: A cloudier day with more rain moving in the southeast through the afternoon and tracking northwards. Showers continuing across southwest England and for parts of Scotland. Sunnier for Northern Ireland

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday: Further spells of rain or showers through Monday with rather cloudy skies throughout. High pressure building towards the northeast into Tuesday with colder conditions developing through the week.
