The CIA has reportedly conducted a drone strike earlier this month targeting a port facility on Venezuela's coastline.

The attack represents the first known US military action against a target within Venezuelan territory. US President Donald Trump appeared to acknowledge the strike during what seemed to be an unplanned radio interview on Friday, and when pressed by journalists on Monday about "an explosion in Venezuela," he confirmed America had hit a facility allegedly used for drug trafficking operations, The Daily Star reports.

"There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs," Trump stated whilst meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida, referring to the Venezuelan strike.

"They load the boats up with drugs, so we hit all the boats and now we hit the area. It's the implementation area. There's where they implement. And that is no longer around."

The operation focused on an isolated dock along Venezuela's coast. American intelligence services believed the location was being utilised by Venezuelan criminal organisation Tren de Aragua for storing and transporting narcotics onto vessels for international distribution, CNN reported.

There have been no reports of casualties, as it's understood the facility was unoccupied when the strike occurred. According to CNN, the attack seemingly generated minimal attention, even domestically, at the time it happened.

The strike risks heightening tensions between Washington and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The US has been mounting pressure on Maduro to resign through an assertive military campaign.

The US has targeted over 30 vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean as part of what it claims is an anti-narcotics operation. Additionally, Trump has ordered a blockade of oil tankers subject to sanctions to and from Venezuela.

The US president has repeatedly threatened to launch attacks within Venezuela, but the only confirmed US strikes on Venezuelan targets have been against suspected drug trafficking boats in international waters, prior to the strike executed by the CIA earlier this month.

CNN reported that the CIA declined to comment.
