A Mediterranean cruise offers an idyllic winter escape, particularly after a busy festive season, and some are available at discounted prices. It's cheaper than staying at a Travelodge per night and allows you to take in some of the most scenic sights across Europe, but there's something you'll need to be prepared for.

For those looking to book their next getaway, Cruise Critic has revealed some of the best deals available for those looking to set sail during the first few months of the year. Some of the cruises, leaving from either Southampton or London, start from just £62 per night, as outlined by the leading cruise research and booking website.

One of the best deals is a Classical Mediterranean cruise, which starts from £62 per night, departing from London on 19 February. Travellers on board will explore the likes of Porto (Leixoes), Cádiz (Seville), Malaga, Palma de Mallorca (Majorca), Barcelona, Pisa, Rome (Civitavecchia), Naples, Palermo (Sicily), Trapani, Malta (Valletta), Tunis (La Goulette), Cagliari, Valencia, Alicante and Lisbon.

The mammoth cruise is for those seeking an adventure, offering a 31-night trip that returns on March 22. Alternatively, you can board a 7-night Mediterranean - Western from just £41 per night, but you'll need to be prepared to fly to Florence from where it departs on 28 January.

Those interested in exploring the Mediterranean during the first few months of the year should be prepared for some chilly weather conditions. While Europe typically offers more sunshine than the UK, taking a voyage during the winter months can be unpredictable, and choppy sea conditions can vary.

Additionally, while some European countries offer a welcoming 15C January, the hours of daylight during winter are typically shorter, meaning you might have less time to explore destinations. However, for those seeking a warmer climate, there are plenty of alternatives available, still at a discounted rate.

One of which is the Mediterranean - Spain, France and Italy route, which departs from Southampton on 12 April for a 14-night cruise, returning on 26 April. This cruise starts from just £69 per night and will stop at the following locations: Cádiz (Seville), Barcelona, La Seyne Sur Mer, La Spezia (Cinque Terre), Rome (Civitavecchia), and Alicante.

Another deal available is a 14-night Mediterranean Adventurer, departing from Southampton on 11 April and returning on 25 April. This starts from £71 per night and will cruise to Cádiz (Seville), Barcelona, Toulon, Florence (Livorno), Rome (Civitavecchia) and Corsica (Ajaccio).

Alternatively, if you're looking for a lengthy adventure, you can board a 40-night Jewels Of The Caribbean Sea cruise on 30 January, departing from London and returning on 11 March, which starts from £59 per night. This will take you to explore a whopping 13 destinations, including Praia da Vitoria, Antigua, Tortola, Havana, Grand Cayman (Georgetown), Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Santo Domingo, Martinique, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and St. Kitts (Port Zante).
