A comprehensive list of counties expected to be battered by snow in late January as a fresh - and potentially more severe - weather system arrives has been disclosed. The snow bomb is forecast to return from January 26, with flurries beginning from midday on that Monday.
Charts display counties throughout the Home Nations blanketed in a white shade - indicating snow. Counties under threat include the West Midlands conurbation, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Kent, Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Herefordshire.
Additional areas under threat include Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Shropshire, Leicestershire, Greater London, Greater Manchester, Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire.
Examining the period from Monday 26 January to Sunday 8 February, the BBC states: " Becoming milder and unsettled again at some point."
The BBC Weather team continues: "Heading through to the end of January and into early February, there is a high degree of uncertainty, with two potential scenarios.
"We will continue to see a chance of strong high pressure to the north-east extending its influence towards the UK and inducing broadly easterly flows, with temperatures below average and some wintry conditions possible.
"Atlantic frontal systems will continue to knock on the door, however, and the question is how far they might come across north-west Europe. If they make more progress, then a milder and unsettled regime would ensue.
"Bearing in mind the very low confidence, we could see colder conditions continuing through late January before we see some sort of change.
"The timing of any such potential switch is problematic, but by the end of the first week of February we might see milder and rainy conditions returning.
"In Friday's outlook we will see if there is any clearer and more consistent indication of a possible cold period, and how long it might last.
"We will also be able to take a look towards mid-February."
