Police have launched a murder investigation after the death of a baby boy with a head injury. Three-month-old Atijus Elertaite was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after officers were called to a property in the town of March on January 3, Cambridgeshire Police said.
The force said officers attended the address in St John’s Chase at just after 11am. Atijus died five days later on January 8 and a post-mortem examination recorded his preliminary cause of death as a head injury, pending further medical inquiries, police said.
The force said that a woman, aged 25, and a 22-year-old man, both from March, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) before Atijus died.
The pair were re-arrested on Thursday on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.
Detective Inspector Verity McCann said: “We know the local community will be shocked and deeply saddened, and our thoughts remain with those affected by Atijus’ death.
“We are working hard to establish exactly what happened and urge everyone to be mindful and not speculate on the case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation.”
