Under Salt Marsh arrives on Sky this week and the British crime drama has already sparked curiosity amongst viewers regarding the series' filming locations.

The six-part series set in Wales begins with the death of schoolboy Cefin Hill (portrayed by Jack Thomas-Humphreys), whose body is found in a rainwater ditch by his schoolteacher and former police detective Jackie Ellis (Kelly Reilly) when a massive storm strikes the Welsh town of Morfa Halen, reports Wales Online.

Ellis must work with her former estranged police partner Eric Bull (Rafe Spall) if they hope to solve the case, having previously let down the community over the disappearance of her niece Nessa (Amara Atwal) several years prior.

Here's a look at the filming locations for Under Salt Marsh and the series' setting.

Under Salt Marsh is situated in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen, which sits between the mountains and the sea.

Nevertheless, Morfa Halen is rapidly being consumed by the sea, with any evidence of crimes being swept away and the police battling against time to secure answers.

Yellowstone star Reilly commented on Morfa Halen: "It's fictional but inspired by real rural communities in coastal towns across Wales, threatened by climate change and flooding.

"We filmed on location, which added authenticity. The environment is a character in itself - reflecting Jackie's emotional state and the fragility of the community."

Another crucial fictional location in Under Salt Marsh is Spider Island, which consisted of wooden huts constructed in a studio by the production crew.

Filming took place throughout both North and South Wales, with the marsh sequences captured in the North.

The production employed location scouts, who hadn't previously worked in the region, to discover dramatic landscapes that would overshadow the local community and highlight the area's untamed natural splendour.

Substantial filming occurred at the Mawddach Estuary in North Wales, Anglesey, and Fairbourne Beach.

Welsh star Jonathan Pryce remarked: "Filming in North Wales was a joy. It's rare to shoot there, and it was great to return to places near my hometown of Holywell and see Snowdonia from a new perspective."

Amongst the principal filming locations for Under Salt Marsh were Anglesey, Fairbourne, Barmouth, Mawddach Estuary, Llanbedr, and the Menai Bridge area.

Newborough Forest, Niwbwrch in Anglesey, featured prominently, with the 2,000-acre coastal expanse, showcasing dunes, coastal marshes, and sandy and rocky coastlines.

The compact coastal village of Fairbourne in Gwynedd, North Wales, which sits near the Snowdonia National Park, featured significantly.

Fairbourne appeared extensively throughout the programme, with Fairbourne Golf Club on Penrhyn Drive North, doubling as an ice cream parlour.

The Promenade Car Park in Fairbourne served as the setting for the seafront and sea wall sequences. Furthermore, crime scene, footpath and ditch scenes were also filmed in the vicinity.

Other spots in the region featured Fairbourne roads such as Llewelyn Drive; Fairbourne / Friog Corner, Beach Road; and Fairbourne itself, which doubled as the salt marsh.

Actress Kimberley Nixon, who portrays Cefin's mother Shell Hill, discussed some of the most moving sequences she filmed: "We filmed all over Wales - South and North.

"The Hill House set was beautifully detailed, with family photos and knick-knacks that made it feel real.

"But the most unforgettable scene was on the marshes in North Wales, in the middle of the night, holding Cefin's body. It was cold, wet, and emotionally raw. The crew gave us space, and it felt like we were truly alone in that moment."

Multiple sites were utilised in Barmouth, featuring Barmouth Estuary; a field at Borthwnog Hall, near Bontddu; the Mawddach Estuary, near Barmouth; and Sylfaen Farm on Panorama Road, Barmouth.

The settlement of Llanbedr was employed, particularly Shell Island, Llanbedr, which served as the quay and causeway marsh in the programme.

The Menai Bridge in Anglesey was also utilised alongside The Gazelle Inn, Glyngarth.

Under Salt Marsh airs on Sky and NOW on January 30
