Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been dealt an embarrassing blow after they were snubbed in a new study which revealed the top celebrities the public can't stop talking about. Digital entertainment platform JB.com analysed public attention, including Google Search volume for the last month, Instagram hashtags, total media coverage, and recent related news. The top five couples have been revealed, and while Prince William and Princess Kate made the list, Meghan and Harry were snubbed.
At number one is Donald and Melania Trump. Public discussions of Donald and Melania outshine all other political and celebrity couples, with 38.5M media posts and almost 53K news articles just recently. They’ve been married for 21 years, and people look up their relationship specifically over 11.2 million times each month.
Number two is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. They may have ended their relationship in 2016, but people keep obsessing over them, with 28.6 million queries each month, making them the most searched couple on the Internet. Many legal battles and new private details that resurfaced in recent years kept the media interested, too, and just in the last few months, 7,560 articles were written about them.
Prince William and Kate Middleton rank third as the most discussed royal couple. Unlike Trump or Pitt-Jolie marriages, the media coverage for them remains positive in over 51.8 million articles. The pair also rivals Hollywood celebrities in online popularity, with 142K Instagram posts dedicated to their marriage, not far behind Pitt and Jolie.
Number four is Barack and Michelle Obama, who have been together the longest in the top 10, with 33 years of marriage. In the media, they’re mentioned over 30.7 million times, while news referenced them around 30K times recently, even though they’re not as active in politics now. The couple has many fans, too, as 4 million people look them up online each month.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z round up the top 5 of the most discussed celebrity relationships, with 31.7 million media mentions, getting ahead of Obama's and Pitt-Jolie's relationship. The couple also enjoys mostly positive coverage, and they were mentioned in 3,600 news articles recently. The biggest attention for them comes from Instagram, where 447K posts are tagged for their relationship, 3 times more than for Kate Middleton and Prince William.
Other celebrity couples in the top ten list include David and Victoria Beckham and Amal and George Clooney, both of whom are said to have had fall-outs with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The Beckhams, who attended Meghan and Harry's wedding, reportedly feuded with the couple after Harry accused Victoria of "selling stories" on them. Meanwhile, despite also attending the couple's 2018 wedding, George then distanced himself from Harry and Meghan, saying he didn't know them well.
With the couple trying to break Hollywood with a number of Netflix shows, and Meghan's return to acting later this year, this list is sure to be a brutal blow to the pair.
