The Plantation Garden

Some of the most beautiful places in the world can be found right on our doorstep, and there's one hidden gem that will make you feel as though you're in the heart of Italy.

The city of Norwich in Norfolk is renowned for its original medieval architecture, narrow cobbled lanes and status as England’s first UNESCO City of Literature. It was named as the 'best place to live in the UK' for 2026 by the Sunday Times, and while its location near the coast in the East of England can seem a little out of the way, it attracts millions of visitors each year.

Steeped in history, there's plenty for tourists to explore, from its two majestic cathedrals and grand 12th-century castle, to the bygone backdrops of Elm Hill and the famed 900-year-old outdoor market of around 200 colourful stalls. The city also has a thriving independent scene, with around 500 businesses scattered around the city, 300 of which line the narrow streets of Norwich Lanes.

But there's one Norwich attraction that often goes unnoticed by tourists, and residents can't recommend it enough. "The Plantation Garden is really pretty. I recommend going there, especially on a lovely day, Karen Williams, owner of For the Love of Norfolk, exclusively told the Express.

"You wouldn't believe you're in the city centre, and tourists don't go there; it's only locals who really know about it." Norwich City Host Malcolm also recommended the attraction to the Express. "The Plantation Gardens are really lovely."

Known as a 'hidden gem' or 'Norwich’s Secret Garden', it is a beautifully restored Victorian town garden spanning three acres in a former chalk quarry. It's a tranquil haven away from the city centre, with a striking gothic fountain, an Italianate terrace, and a medieval terrace wall that feels as though you've been transported to Italy.

Surrounding the enclosed gardens is ancient woodland, with walkways to wander around and a rustic bridge that only adds to the undeniable character of the otherworldly terrain. There are faces and architectural details hidden within the ancient walls of the gardens, amongst its pristine lawns and colourful flowerbeds.

Entry to the garden is £2 per adult via an honesty box, while accompanied under-16s can enter free of charge. It's a peaceful oasis from the moment you walk through the gates, where you'll catch locals reading a book on one of the benches scattered around the garden or enjoying a gentle chat among friends.

During the summer months, the Plantation Gardens hosts a series of events, including live music, puppet shows, poetry readings, theatre performances, and an outdoor cinema. The gardens are open every day from 9am to 6pm from April to September, and from 9am to 4pm from October to March.

The gardens are around a 10-minute walk from the city centre of Norwich, off Earlham Road and just down the road from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Norwich City Host Malcolm added that it's a little out of the way, but there are buses available for anyone who doesn't fancy walking.

However, the walk is pleasant enough, starting from the city centre, with the option to pass through some of its iconic Norwich Lanes, of charming narrow streets and independent coffee houses, eateries and shops. There aren't any cafés or facilities at Plantation Gardens, so the area also provides a perfect spot to stop for a refreshment or snack while on route or return, with Kofra Coffee Roasters being a personal favourite of ours.
