The trip was privately funded, with the couple travelling Down Under at the request of several charities they are aligned with, such as the Invictus Games. But many have drawn parallels to the trips they undertook on behalf of the Royal Family when they were senior working members, and suggested they should be welcomed back into the fold.

Some Sussex fans have also suggested that any future humanitarian trips they carry out should be funded by the Firm. But what do you think? Vote in our poll below.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties at the start of 2020, choosing instead to pursue a private life away from the Royal Family in the US.

They have undertaken a number of commercial projects, from Netflix shows to book deals and a lifestyle brand, but Harry continues to support the few patronages he was able to keep after stepping down as a working royal.

He continues to support charities such as WellChild, the HALO Trust and the Invictus Games.

In September, he travelled back to the UK to undertake several days of engagements.

But when the couple stepped back from their role, it was agreed with Queen Elizabeth II in the so-called Sandringham Summit that they could not perform a half-in-half-out role, which combined commercial projects with royal duties.

As a result many Palace officials have been uncomfortable with the Sussexes' trip to Australia, which saw Meghan attempt to make money off her wardrobe while conducting visits to a children's hospital and a meeting with terrorist attack survivors.

Royal expert Robert Jobson, author of The Windsor Legacy, reflected: "The answer from the top was clear: no halfway role was possible. They were either in or out.

"Her Majesty’s ruling deepened the existing tensions in the family, particularly between Harry and William."
