A 15 year planning battle is raging on after Aldi planned to build a new store in a Welsh seaside town. The supermarket wanted to build a store and hotel and had applied for planning permission in 2011.
The plans would use a former Kwik Save site in Aberystwyth. However, they re-visited the original plans and later submitted an application for a new scheme, without the hotel. In June 2019, the plans were approved by Ceredigion County Council. But, it was called in over flooding fears by Welsh planning inspectors.
It took a huge three years to reach a final decision but it was eventually rejected in 2022. This decision was made even though Aldi already had planning in place for the other project.
Aldi said it remains committed to a new shop and has continued to hold talks about its plans.
New information has shown that a pre-application enquiry was made with the council in 2025 over revised plans for a food store, reports North Wales Live.
In the latest move Aldi submitted an application to the council to enquire whether the previously approved plans for a store and hotel were extant.
They said work had been carried out on the development with the demolition of the old buildings.
They said this should mean permission to develop that scheme is still in place as work was done within five years of the application being granted.
The council said the Certificate for lawful implementation of development and confirmation that planning permission A151045 is extant.
This means the development can still proceed.
Permission exists for the original scheme but they may use that as part of a new application for a standalone food store.
