Mony Don has shared his plans to leave a heartfelt legacy for his family to cherish for decades to come in a touching end-of-life admission. The Gardeners' World star teamed up with the fashion brand Barbour as he took them through the Black Mountains of Wales, where he has curated and tended to a Hazel coppice. As he reflected on the lessons nature has given him, he shared a small gift he will pass down to his children and grandchildren long after he's gone.

Taking the fashion brand on his sprawling acreage, the 70-year-old horticulturist gushed over the exciting new project that he "won't see in my lifetime." The presenter chuckled: "This is such a different way of making a garden. I'm used to making gardens attached to houses.

"This is a garden that leaks like blotting paper from the landscape and can disappear back into the landscape. Up to a point, you shouldn't notice I've done too much; you certainly shouldn't know how much I've done, which is years and weeks and months of work.

"I'm very aware whenever I'm here of the big landscape. This valley was carved by glaciers, and life has been lived here for thousands upon thousands of years, so it would be incredibly arrogant to come in and tell it how it ought to be.

"On the other hand, I've come in, and we've planted lots of trees; this is a Hazel coppice." It was at this point that the broadcaster explained the consistent care and attention that a Hazel coppice requires from a gardener, something which he has loved doing since he was seven years old.

He explained: "A Hazel coppice is very much an interaction between mankind and nature, because you're creating and artificial ecosystem, and it's artificial because you have to cut it on a regular basis. But by doing so, you create a very delicate balance of plants, birds, mammals and insects that depend upon the changing light levels and cover. And if you stop doing it, you lose it.

"Between 50 and 70 years, if it's left for that long, it's gone; it becomes something else altogether. I love the intricacy of that; it's almost a dance between yourself as a human being on the landscape and then nature doing what it wants to do."

Reflecting on the lessons nature has taught him, he mused: "I love the sense that you are part of something much bigger, but by the same token, you are tiny, you're nothing. I won't see this in my lifetime; this is not for me. My children, maybe, but probably my grandchildren.

"So this is a project that will take at least 50 years to come to fruition, and should last for another 500 years. Now that's legacy," he beamed. In the special episode, he modelled several pieces from the fashion brand's new range alongside his four-legged friend, Ned.
