Since 1985, EastEnders has seen a revolving door of jaw-dropping murders, weddings gone wrong and disastrous romances that have kept loyal fans on the edge of their seats. While beloved Albert Square has been the birthplace of some unforgettable onscreen couples, many of those love stories have sparked real-life relationships over the years. Thankfully, the soap stars' off-screen love stories are far less complicated than their EastEnders characters. However, none of these romantic relationships stood the test of time, eventually fizzling out after a few months or years.
This was the case for Steve McFadden and Lucy Benjamin, who played Phil Mitchell and Lisa Fowler, respectively. The pair fell in love after the actress joined the BBC cast in 1998. Their time in Albert Square saw Lisa become one of Phil's many love interests and was revealed as his shooter in the infamous Who Shot Phil storyline.

Loose Women's Nadia Sawalha, who kicked off her career as an actress and starred on the BBC soap between 1997 and 1999 as Annie Palmer.
During her stint, the 61-year-old developed feelings for Gianni di Marco star Marc Bannerman. Nadia previously detailed the significant role Marc played in her life after the tragic loss of her husband, Justin Mildwater, who died by suicide in 1997.
In a touching admission, the TV star told OK Magazine: "If it wasn't for Marc, I don't know what I'd have done."
Despite their profound bond, Nadia and Marc's relationship ended after three years. Since 2002, Nadia has been joyfully wed to TV producer Mark Adderley, with whom she has two daughters, Maddie, 23 and Kiki, 18.

Joel Beckett, who entered the Square as Jake Moon from 2004 to 2006, found love behind the scenes with co-star Emma Barton, who currently portrays Honey Mitchell.
Their paths crossed when Emma joined the cast in 2005, but sparks didn't fly until the following year. The duo reportedly shared a private life away from the spotlight for three years.
Post-breakup, Emma found love once again in a long-term relationship with television host Stephen Mulhern, whom she met during a pantomime production in 2009.

Shona McGarty, who joined EastEnders in 2008 as Whitney Dean, found romance with co-star Matt Lapinskas, known for his role as Anthony Moon.
They were together for just over 18 months from 2011 to 2013, and parted ways around the time Matt left the show.
In 2023, the actor opened up about their relationship in an interview with the Daily Star and said: "You have exes, you live, learn and move forward. "Shona is still doing well, she is still in EastEnders and smashing it."
He added: "I wish nothing but the best for everybody, and everyone teaches you something in life. It’s one of those things where stuff happens, but you grow and learn from it."
Their split was seemingly amicable as Matt's Dancing on Ice appearance prompted Shona to tweet: "Yes, it's true, Matt, and I have split, but it has nothing to do with Brianne. Clear head and new beginnings! Mwah xx."

Before getting married and starting a family with reality star Dan Osbourne, Jaqueline Jossa, who is best known as Lauren Branning, shared a short-lived relationship with co-star Tony Discipline.
She met the Tyler Moon star on set, and while their characters were enjoying a steamy fling, the actors were together for one year before breaking up.
According to a source, the couple felt they had grown apart in recent months but will remain friends.

Although they played siblings on screen, Joe Swash and Kara Tointon enjoyed a whirlwind romance away from the cameras.
Her 2005 arrival on EastEnders completed the Miller family and sparked her introduction with her initial relationship with fellow co-star James Alexandrou, who played Martin Fowler, in 2006 which lasted for around a year and a half.
Kara's love story with Joe ended in 2010, to which he confessed to The Sun: "She genuinely does everything right. It was my fault it broke down. I didn't know what I had until she was gone."
Post-separation, Kara discovered love with Marius Jensen, welcoming their firstborn in 2018 and their second son arrived in 2021, but they parted ways the subsequent year.
