There's nothing quite like a road trip through the countryside for a memorable scenic drive but there's one road that, despite its beautiful surroundings, could prove fatal for drivers.
In fact, it's so dangerous it's been nicknamed 'Death Road' by locals. The single-track 64km-stretch of road in Bolivia is carved into the side of the Andes, as a single track road, with no sight of railings as it separates you from the cliff and a 600m-high vertical drop (2,000 ft) into the abyss of the rainforest.
When the weather conditions shift, as they often do in the region, fog, rain, and waterfalls crossing the road turn the surface into a breeding ground for danger, with thick mud and fallen rocks filling the already tiny track.
It may be known as 'Death Road' but its actual name is North Yungas Road, and it runs from La Paz to Coroico in the landlocked country.
The track was built in the 1930s by the Bolivian government with the intention to connect the capital to the Amazon Rainforest, which is in the northern part of the country. The creation of the road was largely down to Paraguayan prisoners during the Chaco War, and some of the sections built are less than three metres wide.
During the 1990s, so many people died in accidents on the highway, the BBC reports, and so in 2026 it seems out of this world that a road of this kind even still exists. However, since a more modern bypass was built between the destinations in 2006, you'll find that most vehicles opt to take a safer route.
Nowadays it tends to be sued as a site for tourism, mountain bikers and thrill-seekers in particular but it still remains the most terrifying road on Earth. One recent visitor described it as an "intense experience" in their Tripadvsior review.
They wrote: "That's right, a magnificent and beautiful place in relation to the landscape that can be observed. It is an adventure with a lot of intensity that can be done, it seems extreme and a unique experience."
Another adventurer dubbing it as "adrenaline galore" shared: "Riding death Road is one of the best experiences ever ! It is absolutely amazing. It is mainly downhill and the whole thing is about 40km and takes about 4 hours. There is really nice spots for photos as well."
