Meghan Markle addressed the Lost Screen Memorial in Geneva on Sunday (May 17), but as she attended the event, the streets looked far emptier than she expected, according to exclusive body language analysis. The Duchess of Sussex delivered the speech to an audience, but the lack of people at the barriers was notable. Viewers rushed to X to discuss the crushing moment, with one user writing that she appeared "defeated" when she realised there were no crowds.
And this sentiment is mirrored by body language expert Inbaal Honigman, in collaboration with Casino CA, who said: "Meghan Markle's dropped smile shows disappointment as she looks around to see nobody behind the barriers. Curiously, she may not have even realised that her mask slipped, because parts of her face are still holding on to the smile, but not all. It was the moment that Meghan turned her face seemingly to greet crowds, only to realise there wasn't any there."
She continued: "The former royal is seen turning her face to greet the non-existent crowds, and she appears to say 'hi!'. In a well-practised showbizzy move, she flashes a smile, cheeks rounded, eyebrows raised. This welcoming, greeting face is perfection, and could easily be mistaken for a genuine, cheery smile. However, as soon as she turns her face away, she lowers her eyes, which is a blocking gesture. These lowered eyes indicate that she's momentarily deep in thought, processing her devastation before deciding how to proceed."
It was explained that Meghan looked up once more, with her cheeks "still rounded," as though she were about to smile, but her mouth dropped. Meghan's smiling face gave way to a pout. Inbaal added: "When the facial expression is inconsistent like that, when different parts of the face represent different emotions, then there's a good chance that this is not an authentic facial expression."
It was noted that when it appears that "parts of the smile are gone", the emotion behind the smile is typically gone entirely. She added: "But Meghan's unchanged, rounded cheeks could suggest that she still thinks she's smiling for the cameras. She may not have realised that her mask slipped.
"Interestingly, her pout could represent stubbornness or determination, as she encourages herself to keep going despite the disappointment. Those pouting lips remind her not to give up, keep going."
Meghan then delivered an important speech on people who have died after suffering from digital harm. The cause is one both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have advocated for: stronger protections for children online.
