Donald Trump has reportedly ordered the Pentagon to draw up plans to strike Cuba after his Iran strategy spiralled into chaos.
Senior administration officials are warning the US President that Cuba is becoming a growing national security threat because of its ties to Russia, China and Iran.
According to a bombshell Politico report, “the ,odds of Trump attacking Cuba are going up” and the U.S. Southern Command has in the past few weeks “convened a planning series”.
“The mood has definitely changed,” said the person familiar with discussions.
“The initial idea on Cuba was that the leadership was weak and that the combination of stepped-up sanctions enforcement, really an oil blockade, and clear U.S. military wins in Venezuela and Iran would scare the Cubans into making a deal.
"Now Iran has gone sideways, and the Cubans are proving much tougher than originally thought. So now military action is on the table in a way that it wasn’t before.”
Trump himself has repeatedly hinted that Cuba could be next.
Speaking earlier this year, the President warned the Cuban regime was “going to fall” because of American pressure.
“We cut off all oil, all money, or we cut off everything coming in from Venezuela,” Trump said. “They want to make a deal.”
He added: “That’s one of the small ones for me.”
The White House has not publicly confirmed military plans, but reports suggest officials have discussed a range of options - including naval blockades, drone strikes and operations targeting Cuban military infrastructure.
The renewed focus on Cuba comes after Trump’s aggressive Iran strategy triggered international backlash, soaring oil prices and growing concern among Republicans about the risk of a wider war.
Analysts believe the administration may now view Cuba as a politically easier target because of its proximity to the United States and longstanding hostility among parts of the Cuban-American community in Florida.
Tensions exploded this week after US intelligence reports claimed Cuba had acquired more than 300 military drones from Russia and Iran since 2023.
According to Axios, American officials are monitoring alleged discussions within the Cuban military about potential attacks on Guantanamo Bay and even Key West, Florida.
Havana has furiously denied the accusations.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned that any American attack would trigger a “bloodbath” and devastate regional stability.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla accused Washington of manufacturing a crisis to justify intervention, saying the US was creating “fraudulent” claims designed to pave the way for military aggression.
Meanwhile, more than 30 Democratic lawmakers have urged Trump to rule out military action entirely, warning that escalating rhetoric could spark a humanitarian disaster across the Caribbean.
