Britain is set to bask in soaring temperatures over the Bank Holiday weekend. The warm spell, however, is expected to continue beyond Monday and into the latter part of the week. New weather maps suggest a major warm spell could grip the UK next week, with temperatures predicted to reach 31C by Wednesday, May 27.

According to the latest maps from WX Charts, most of the UK is expected to enjoy temperatures above 21C by around 6pm on Tuesday, May 26. Parts of the Scottish Highlands could reach 26C, while London and Surrey are forecast to hit 28C. Temperatures of 27C are also expected across large parts of England, including Northumberland, Somerset, East Sussex, Cumbria and Shropshire.

The heat is then forecast to intensify on Wednesday, with temperatures potentially reaching 31C in Greater London and 30C in Surrey. Many other areas such as Kent, Essex, West and East Sussex, Norfolk and Suffolk could all see highs of 29C.

By Thursday evening, the hot conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures remaining as high as 29C in several parts such as Greater London and Dorset.

A heatwave is defined as three consecutive days where daily maximum temperatures meet or exceed a specific threshold, which varies across the UK.

Meanwhile, the BBC forecast is showing no sign of rain for some parts of the country over the next two weeks, alongside temperatures consistently above 21C. In London, for example, conditions are expected to stay warm throughout the period with 23C on Thursday, May 21, followed by 23C on May 22, rising to 27C on May 23 and May 24.

Temperatures then peak at 29C on May 25, May 26 and May 27, before easing slightly to 28C on May 28, 26C on May 29, and 24C on May 30. 23C has also been forecast on May 31, 22C on Monday, June 1, and 23C on June 2.

Separately, the Met Office's long range forecast for the period of May 24 to June 2 reads: "Warm and dry for most on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

"Through the following week, high pressure is expected to remain in place for much of the UK, meaning fine weather likely to continue for most places.

"Some patchy rain may affect the far north at times and perhaps a few showers in the far south. Temperatures are expected to be above normal, feeling very warm at times with light winds."
