Begonias are a firm favourite with gardeners because they are relatively inexpensive, easy to grow and, with the right care, reward you with masses of colourful blooms throughout the season.
Speaking to the Express from her colourful stand in the Great Pavilion, she said regularly feeding them right fertilizer is the key to keeping plants blooming.
“Generally, for flowers you want a high-potassium feed. Something like a tomato feed is the simplest way of doing it,” she said.
“Once the plants are established in the pot, or wherever they’re growing, just give them a regular high-potassium feed about once a fortnight.”
Potassium helps plants direct energy into producing flowers rather than leafy growth, making it ideal for begonias, which can bloom continuously for months when kept well-fed.
The good news is that flowering, or shrub begonias, are not as fussy as some other varieties and will grow in a wide range of gardens.
