A BBC star has paid tribute to a late TV gardener in a post on social media. The Repair Shop star, Brenton West, paid homage to Gardeners' World legend, Geoff Hamilton, as he created a beautiful outside space inspired by him.

Posting to Instagram, Brenton shared a clip of his garden, which featured some potted plants with geraniums "for a bit of colour", and lots of leafy plants in the bedding areas. He then panned the camera to a sweetpea pergola, as he admitted: "But that's not going so well at the moment," before moving on to show off some white and blue wildflowers. Brenton also shared some footage of two olive trees and "lots of roses" before adding that his garden also included peonies and lavender.

Moving away to a more secluded area, Brenton showed off his "favourite part" which featured a stream and lots of lilies. "There's lots going on and a contrast of colour," he said. The garden was also home to a decent sized vegetable patch.

In the caption, he then explained: "English cottage garden, inspired by the late Geoff Hamilton. My house isn't really called Westacres by the way."

Fans then added their own messages for the late gardener in the comments. One penned: "Geoff Hamilton was a wonderful gardener," followed by a sad face emoji. In reply, Brenton admitted: "I learned it all from him."

Geoff first started making guest appearances on Gardeners' World in the 1970s, becoming its regular presenter in 1979. In 1985, he was responsible for moving the show's venue to his own garden at Barnsdale, Oakham, Rutland.

As well as presenting Gardeners' World, he made several series, including the highly successful Geoff Hamilton's Cottage Gardens.

He once said: "I've been gardening for more than 50 years now and I still can't get over that excitement every year, when you look over the trays of seedlings you planted out and wonder if they are going to come through - and they do."

He died in 1996, aged just 59, after suffering a heart attack while taking part in a charity cycle run.
