Various supermarket chains are opening new locations across the UK – and these include Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi stores. The new shops span across the country and will bring new shopping options to communities from major cities to smaller towns.

While high street giant Morrisons plans to open a huge new store, Tesco hopes to deliver 70 more Express stores to the UK. These expansions come as major retailers continue to invest in their physical stores despite growing competition from online shopping. Shoppers can expect greater access to groceries and household staples as the new sites begin to welcome customers.

After opening 60 new Express stores in 2025, Tesco plans to deliver over 70 more Express stores before March 2027.

In London, Tesco is expanding through the acquisition of five former Amazon Fresh locations. These include stores in Kensington High Street, Hounslow, Moorgate, Aldgate East and Wembley, which are all set to reopen as Tesco Express stores before the summer.

Tesco also plans to open various Express stores elsewhere in the UK. These include spots like Bickington in Devon, Pontrhydyrun in Torfaen, Strabane in County Tyrone and Wallyford, East Lothian.

As well as these, the popular supermarket chain plans to expand its large store estate. While two new superstores opened in Ripon and Harrogate in November and December 2025, the supermarket chain will introduce two more. Pitlochry and Heartlands in Scotland will see two more large stores this year.

Morrisons has also submitted new plans for a massive store, covering an expansive 25,000 square feet. Although the supermarket is shutting several of its Morrisons Daily stores across the UK, the plans for a new large store, in Lewes, East Sussex, could offer locals a significantly wider range of produce.

The new spot would feature Morrisons’ famous Market Street, with specialist butchers and fishmongers as well as landscaped public spaces and new retail.

Morrisons is set to submit a two-part hybrid planning application for the development, a move designed to help accelerate the approval process.

The first phase includes detailed proposals for the supermarket, car parking facilities and public realm improvements, including a new town square.

The second outline plans for a further 40,000 sq ft of retail space on the eastern section of the site, which could feature several drive-thru outlets like as coffee shops and sandwich chains.

Aldi has also recently revealed 124 locations where it hopes to open new UK stores.

The supermarket chain has recently invested more than £370 million into new branches, with a plan to open more than 1,500 locations nationwide.

Customers can have a say until June 18 about where they hope to have a new Aldi, by emailing NextNewStore@aldi.co.uk.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: “We know how important it is for people to have access to affordable, high-quality food close to where they live, which is why we’re asking our shoppers to help us identify the communities that would benefit most from a new Aldi store.

“Opening new stores in these areas means we can bring great value to more customers, while also creating jobs and offering industry-leading pay.”

Justin Lawrence, Development Manager at Morrisons, said: "We recognise the importance of this development to the residents of Peacehaven, and we appreciate people’s patience.

"We have worked with the council’s officers to ensure our plans align with local priorities and are deliverable. We now look forward to sharing them with the community with a view to securing planning approval for the supermarket in the coming months."

Nick Johnson, Tesco Group Property Director, also spoke on the chain’s new developments: “As one of the UK’s leading retailers, we support jobs and local economies up and down the UK, and as we grow our store network we’re delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities.

“We are hugely excited about the year ahead and looking forward to meeting our customers where they are with great quality, exceptional value and brilliant customer service.”
