A fresh study by GuruWalk, the world's largest platform for free walking tours, has crowned Rome the globe's most walkable destination for "travellers fascinated by ancient history", drawing on the preferences of more than four million travellers who used the platform.
The city's historic centre offers an abundance of iconic sights, while the surrounding streets and narrow cobblestone alleyways are frequently too tight for traffic, making exploration on foot an exceptionally worthwhile endeavour.
Many of Rome's most iconic monuments, including The Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are within 20 minutes' walk of one another, and there are countless Baroque piazzas to pause in as well.
Rome's oldest surviving structure, the present incarnation of the Pantheon, which initially functioned as a temple for Roman deities, was finished in 126 AD and is encircled by three of Rome's most cherished squares - Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, and Campo de Fiori.
