The Greek islands have long been a beloved destination for British holidaymakers, thanks to their stunning beaches, lively resorts and unmissable dining spots. Yet there is one island that gives the likes of Mykonos and Santorini a run for their money, boasting a breathtaking landscape, upmarket resorts and exceptional cuisine, while remaining largely off the radar for many travellers.
Alonissos may not be entirely undiscovered — a number of holiday operators including TUI, Jet2 and Sunvil offer packages to the island — but it is far less well-known than the likes of Rhodes and Crete, meaning you won't be contending with the same overwhelming crowds. This is not the island for those seeking all-night raves or heaving nightclubs. Its evening scene revolves more around intimate bars and outstanding restaurants where you could effortlessly while away the hours sampling that world-renowned Greek cuisine, reports the Mirror.
That said, there is no shortage of things to see and do on the island.
The lush, verdant scenery is perfectly suited to those keen to tackle some of the walking trails, and there are numerous museums and historic sites nestled throughout the landscape.
Meanwhile, the Old Town's cobbled streets, lined with tavernas and boutique shops, will have you feeling as though you've wandered straight onto the set of Mamma Mia!
However, one of the primary attractions of Alonissos must be its beaches.
According to TUI: "Some of the cleanest waters in the Aegean lap against Alonissos' coastline, so going for a paddle should be a top priority. Snorkel fans should head for Steni Vala Beach, Glyfa Beach or Votsi Beach – all come with crystal-clear shallows, and shoals of tiny fish dart below."

Amongst the most sought-after destinations is the pebbled Agios Dimitrios Beach, which consistently delights visitors.
One satisfied holidaymaker wrote on Tripadvisor: "This large beach, famed on many adverts and social media platforms lives up to the great expectations. The setting is wonderful seemingly surrounded by the typography of Alonissos and its neighbouring Island Peristera. There are even ducks using the water like it's their own pond!"
"The water is crystal clear and easily accessible from the small uniformed size small pebbles that form the beach. Enough free parking and two good eating choices with facilities on site. Great value and world class for sure. There is an inflatable section for children."

Another remarked: "Fabulous beach - spent the entire day on the beach - crystal clear waters and quietness- bliss! No crowds or music to annoy! Tavern on the beach staffed by a friendly lady - great food on offer. A must visit on Alonissos!"
Those drawn to sandy coastlines should make a point of visiting Chrisi Milia Beach, boasting fine golden sands that one visitor described as the "nicest beach I've ever been to".
A small taverna is on hand to keep hunger and thirst at bay throughout the day, though it is worth bearing in mind that hotels can reserve sections of the beach for their guests, meaning it can become particularly crowded during the height of summer.
