Prince Harry suffered a humiliating blow which could spark bad news for Meghan Markle. TalkTV presenter Mark Dolan addressed the recent Sussex debacle as Harry faced fresh calls to step down from his role at the head of charity African Parks after it was accused of funding rangers who are alleged to have committed “horrific abuses.”
But in another turn of events the Duke of Sussex could be hit with another blow as discussed by the presenter during his Saturday programme. The host addressed claims Harry was charging $1million (£774,000) for speech appearances but reports in February said the amount has dropped to $50,000 (£37,000). He mused, "Poor Harry. I don't wish to demonise him but he must wake up in the morning sometimes and think what am I for?"
Mark began: "The business partnerships seem to have disappeared. The speaking engagements have dwindled and gone from a million quid a speech, I should say $1million to $50,000. Then there is the broadcast deal with Netflix which has gone south and it seems if Netflix are pursuing projects, it is going to be with Meghan and not Harry. He is not a frontline, serving member of the Royal Family."
Former royal butler, Grant Harrold, who has known the prince for several years, suggested he was unsure how Harry would cope with such little income.
"The other thing is they have made a lot of money out of 'Brand Sussex,'" he explained. "I don't think a lot of people are against that because at the end of the day he has to make a living. He has to make money."
Grant claimed their visit to Australia was in essence that of a royal tour.
He continued: "[Harry] is not supposed to be doing that. His plan was to go to the States. No more royalness. He would have a completely different life. To me, he was going to have a celebrity lifestyle."
"They are not a working royal couple," Grant commented, "they are a celebrity royal couple."
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from royal life in 2020 to become financially independent. Since leaving their lives as senior royals, the couple has gained some commercial success from brand deals including Netflix and Spotify.
Prince Harry is reportedly worth $60 million (£44 million) thanks to his contracts and inheritance.
Meanwhile, Meghan has previously defended her decision to continue working to earn a living. “I need to work, and I love to work,” she told the New York Times in 2025.
The Suits actress added that, before she met Harry in 2016, she wasn’t without a job since she was 13.
