Five islands part of the Canary archipelago are under yellow weather warnings for wind and rough seas. Winds reaching speeds of up to 80km/h will batter the holiday hotspots today with State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warning locals and tourists to take extra care in exposed coastal and mountain areas throughout the weekend.

Gran Canaria is forecast to bear the full force of the violent weather, with powerful gusts of up to 80km/h expected to batter the island's eastern, southern and western areas for 24 hours from midnight on June 6. Gusts of up to 70km/h are expected to also sweep across the serene, mountainous island of La Gomera. Issued from midnight, the warning will stay in place until 11.59pm today and also covers El Hierro, the westernmost and southernmost of the Canary Islands.

The southeastern and western parts of the island will see the strongest gusts.

Elsewhere, La Palma is under a yellow wind warning from midnight today until 3pm the same day.

Forecasters are predicting winds reaching 70km/h, with warnings in place for higher ground and western parts of the island, particularly the summit areas, the northwest and the extreme south.

Meanwhile, the tourist hospot of Tenerife is under three seperate weather warnings. The eastern, southern and western sections of the Canary Islands' biggest island will see wind gusts reach 70km/h from midnight this morning for 24 hours.
