Legendary TalkSport presenter Danny Kelly has given updates to fans on his cancer treatment and admitted that he was "lucky" to have survived a "life and death situation" in the hospital. The 69-year-old apologised to fans for going radio silent since he last posted on social media in May.

The broadcaster announced the devastating news on the programme in March to tell listeners that he had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer after visiting a doctor for suspected acid reflux. Since then, he took a break from the presenting job and began chemotherapy treatments.

Sharing on X today, Danny detailed the gruelling sessions he had in the past month: "I've done the four blasts of chemo. Each one has been followed by a hospitalisation with side-effects, and worse. After the last chemo, 3 weeks ago, I began to feel worse and worse. Passing in and out of consciousness. A&E in Dublin. They stuck a camera down my throat."

But that was it. The long-time presenter also suffered internal bleeding from the shrinking tumour, as well as from a pair of "previously unknown ulcers".

He added, "Luckily, that night, both of Ireland's best gut surgeons were on duty. They stopped the bleeding. Couple of days ago, a nurse described their intervention as 'life and death'. I am lucky."

Danny has been discharged and is recovering at home; however, he said, "[I'm] Weak as a kitten, but grateful again for all of your support." He also posted a selfie of himself wearing an oxygen mask, and another of him wearing headphones and resting in the hospital ward.

Fans sent their well wishes to Danny, with one saying: "Been thinking of you Danny and wishing you well!! Keep up the good fight and you’ll be back on the airwaves before you know it!"

Another fan wrote: "Following your journey Danny and just wish you all the best. Your candour gives us a lot of understanding of what you are going through but we can never fully understand. Hopefully Spurs staying up brought a smile to your face. Missing your great monologues on VFTL. COYS."

Some tried to share football updates with the presenter. One person commented: "You probably missed the gut-wrenching pain of the last month of Tottenham Hotspur's season... Nevertheless, your prayers clearly reached them as they are safe from relegation. Wishing a speedy recovery."
