On Monday night at around 10:30pm, a horrific attack occurred off Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast, where a man in his 40s was repeatedly stabbed outside an apartment complex.
The victim was rushed to the hospital with significant injuries to his eyes, face, neck and back caused by a kitchen knife. He remains in serious condition.
A suspect in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed he is Sudanese and had been granted "legal leave to remain" in Northern Ireland.
Police counter-terrorism partners found no terror link at this stage. Authorities are not looking for anyone else, noting the suspect lived close to the scene.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Northern Ireland political leaders condemned the incident, while police praised the bravery of bystanders who stepped in to stop the assailant.
