Staycations are on the rise, and there's one beautiful UK destination that is rivalling Como in Italy.

Data by Airbnb found that searches among UK travellers for domestic destinations have increased by more than 11 per cent, year-on-year. Staycations not only offer easier travel and greater flexibility, but can also cost a fraction of the price of a getaway abroad, especially as flight fares increase.

As Brits look for alternative ways to enjoy their holidays a little closer to home, Airbnb found that Carlisle, situated in Cumbria, was the top trending destination for summer 2026. Its main rival overseas was Italy's Lake Como, with its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking villages, which was revealed as the top-trending international getaway.

Nestled on the doorstep of some breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, it's easy to see why the historic city of Carlisle is leading the way in staycations this year. It's known as the 'Great Border City' and serves as a major hub for the region, while positioned just eight miles from the Scottish border.

Carlisle is steeped in history with Roman heritage and is the only city in Cumbria. While it's quieter than other UK metropolises and is said to have a village-like charm, the vibrant city still offers plenty of landmarks, shops, museums, galleries, eateries, and events.

Its 900-year-old medieval Carlisle Castle is perhaps one of its most notable landmarks, having served as a principal fortress during years of feuds over the English-Scottish border. There's also the magnificent Carlisle Cathedral, which dates back to 1122, famed for its 14th-century stained glass and star-painted ceiling.

Following a visit to Carlisle Castle, one traveller shared on TripAdvisor: "The Carlisle Castle is absolutely fascinating. We were very fortunate to go on an hour-long guided tour with David, who is smart, witty and full of interesting information. We toured most of the castle and learned so much. Would highly recommend visiting the castle and taking a free guided tour. Also recommend the Cumbria Military Museum, which is very comprehensive and full of interesting exhibits. Worth the admission price."

The city was originally founded as a Roman settlement, Luguvalium, and is part of Hadrian's Wall. The UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, spanning 73 miles across northern England, was the frontier of the Roman Empire and stretches of its remains are in easy reach of Carlisle.

While there's plenty to explore in the city, including its rich history, Carlisle's location is perhaps its most appealing feature. It's conveniently nestled between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the North Pennines National Landscape and the Solway Coast.

It's also a gateway to the stunning landscapes of the Lake District, just a 30-minute drive away. Nevertheless, Carlisle is a haven for avid ramblers and those looking to explore a city steeped in history and its neighbouring landscapes, which are easily among some of the most beautiful in the world.
