The family of Stephen Ogilvie, who sustained injuries in the horrific knife attack in Belfast on Monday, have issued a significant update regarding his condition as unrest continues to grip the city.
Speaking through police, his family acknowledged that a considerable amount of misinformation has been circulating across social media platforms.
They stated: "It is now forcing us to clarify that our loved one is in fact in a stable condition, and we are solely focused on his recovery at this time," in a statement released by the PSNI.
The family further appealed: "We are also appealing to the media and the public to please give us some space. We need privacy to focus on our family right now, without cameras or people speculating about what happened via social media."
The family also condemned the spreading of false information on social media as "deeply distressing" and called for it to cease immediately.
They implored those responsible for the violence to stop, revealing they had been left "feeling disgusted" by the recent disorder.
Stephen Ogilvie, 44, was reported to have lost an eye as a consequence of the attack on Monday evening in north Belfast.
Sudanese man Hadi Alodid, 30, has since appeared before a court charged in connection with the attack.
