A manhunt is underway after a prisoner absconded from a prison transport van in Woolwich. Police have appealed for the public's help in tracing 25-year-old Temitope Segun, who fled custody near Woolwich High Street at about 6.40pm on Monday, June 8.
Segun, who is serving a prison sentence for supplying Class A drugs, had been transported from Bromley Magistrates' Court to HMP Thameside when he escaped. According to the Metropolitan Police, Segun assaulted a member of staff during the journey before making off from the prison transport vehicle. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers and black trainers and is believed to have connections to the Plumstead, Abbey Wood and Woolwich areas. The force has urged anyone who spots him not to approach him and to contact officers immediately.
Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun.
"It is imperative that the public contact police via 999 if they see him – or know where he may be."
The prison transport van was being operated by private contractor Serco, which holds a prisoner escort and custody services contract with the Ministry of Justice across the south of England.
A Serco spokesperson confirmed the incident and said: "An incident occurred on the evening of Monday 8 June in Woolwich. The matter is under investigation."
The company also confirmed that one member of staff was injured during the incident and is now recuperating at home.
The Metropolitan Police investigation into the escape is ongoing as officers continue efforts to locate and arrest Segun.
