Sean Strickland, the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion, was removed from the UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest at the Ellipse by Secret Service personnel on Sunday evening after defying what he claimed was his exclusion from the White House event.

Strickland stated on Instagram that he was neither arrested nor detained, but indicated he "may have been charged with disorderly conduct," an offence in Washington, D. C., categorised as a Class B misdemeanour carrying a potential penalty of up to 90 days' imprisonment, a $500 fine, or both.

Strickland had been openly critical for weeks about his conviction that his forthright political stance, particularly his censure of Donald Trump's relationship with Israel and remarks about Trump's links to Jeffrey Epstein, had led to him being barred from the historic card.

Dana White rejected that interpretation, characterising the absence of an invitation as a result of restricted capacity. Strickland remained unconvinced, and expressed his views loudly and persistently on social media in the days preceding the event.

He had pledged exactly that. "Apparently, I'm not American enough to go to Freedom 250," he had posted online.

"I already bought my plane ticket. We're going. I'm gonna bring the belt and a big bullhorn and we're going right up to the gates."

In the hours preceding the event, he continued to mock the occasion, sharing images on X ridiculing a well-known photograph of Trump at the Western Wall by recreating the pose beside an ordinary wall with a plate balanced on his head, and captioning it "Who did it better?"

He followed through on Sunday. Strickland turned up at the Fan Fest on the Ellipse — the expansive public park adjoining the South Lawn where tens of thousands of supporters had assembled to watch the bouts on large screens — making absolutely no attempt to conceal his presence.

His arrival was far from welcomed by the predominantly MAGA crowd, with fans swiftly surrounding him with jeers and boos before chants of "USA" echoed throughout the venue.

Secret Service agents intervened and removed Strickland from the event.

The spectacle added yet another dimension to a day that had already descended into chaos, with the bouts themselves delayed by an hour owing to severe weather threatening the Washington D. C. area.

The card, headlined by Ilia Topuria's undisputed lightweight title defence against Justin Gaethje, was always set to carry considerable political and cultural significance, having been constructed as both a UFC event and a birthday celebration for the president on his 80th birthday.

Strickland is not the sole American champion within the UFC, yet he ranks amongst the sport's most genuinely unpredictable figures. His political journey has been remarkable.

Having once been an outspoken supporter of Trump, he has become progressively more critical, with Trump's foreign policy stance and the ongoing situation in Iran identified as the key factors behind his growing disenchantment.

It follows scenes of anger among UFC fans after a White House event was delayed.
