Holidaymakers heading to Spain this summer could be asked to prove they have enough money to support themselves during their stay or risk being refused entry at the border.

The rule applies to visitors staying up to 90 days and stems from post-Brexit entry regulations first introduced in 2021, but updated financial thresholds now mean travellers must show higher available funds.

Under the latest requirements for 2026, visitors must be able to demonstrate access to €122.10 (£105.53) per person, per day, alongside a minimum total amount of €1,089.90 (£942), regardless of the length of stay.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the rules earlier this year, confirming the types of documentation that may be accepted at border control.

According to the Daily Mail, it said: "Economic means may be accredited by presenting cash, traveller's cheques, a credit card accompanied by a bank account statement, an up-to-date bank book, or any other resource that accredits the amount available, such as a credit statement regarding the card or bank account."

It added: "Bank letters or online bank statements will not be accepted."

Travellers may also be required to show valid identification such as a passport, and a visa if applicable depending on nationality.

The financial threshold has increased from 2025, when visitors were required to show €118 (£101.99) per person per day and a minimum of €1,065 (£920.47).

Officials say the minimum total applies regardless of how short the stay is, meaning even a four-day trip still requires proof of the full €1,089.90 amount.

Reports have suggested some travellers have already been turned away at Málaga Airport after failing to meet entry requirements.
