Residents in Illinois' Cole and Cumberland counties are urged to seek shelter immediately as a dangerous tornado threatens to inflict significant damage while tearing through the region.
At 6:57 p.m. local time, the National Weather Service confirmed a "large and extremely dangerous tornado" was observed over Charleston, Illinois, travelling eastwards at 40 mph.
"You are in a life-threatening situation. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be destroyed. Considerable damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles is likely, and complete destruction is possible," the NWS warned.
"To protect your life, TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris," the warning continued.
Fox Weather reports that emergency services are responding to damage and fallen power lines in and around Charleston, Illinois. First responders are navigating obstructed roads littered with broken tree branches and debris to conduct safety checks on residents, while local utility teams are evaluating the extent of the infrastructure damage.
According to the Peoria Journal Star, the region had been placed under a tornado watch with extreme conditions through Wednesday. As of 11:15 a.
m. , 3,000 people were without electricity in Woodford County owing to severe weather, according to Ameren, a local utility company.
The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood watch for the Peoria area and much of central and east-central Illinois. Rainfall totals were anticipated to exceed two inches within a brief period.
The highest risk of flash flooding lies south of Peoria and west of Bloomington, the outlet reports.
Weather data indicates that Illinois is poised to surpass last year's record for the number of tornadoes making landfall.
According to figures compiled by AccuWeather, as of Sunday, 145 tornadoes had been recorded across the state. The existing record of 147 was established during 2025, and that milestone is expected to be exceeded on Wednesday afternoon.
Illinois's tornado season generally spans from late April through to late May or early June. This year has witnessed numerous storms extending further into June.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) clarifies that tornadoes can and do occur at any time of year and any hour of the day or night, however.
While the tornadoes capture the headlines, the organisation points out that destruction can arise from numerous other factors linked to them, including flash flooding, large hail, and tornadic-strength straight-line winds.
CBS adds that there was a tornado in the Streator, Illinois, area just last week, reporting that "powerful winds crushed house after house in the southern part of Streator.
Power poles were snapped and transformers thrown to the ground. Cars were tossed from where they were parked, and roofs were ripped off homes."
