Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left their royal duties in 2020 and headed off for a life in the US. The pair had a picture-perfect wedding in 2018 when Meghan officially joined the royals, but since then, things have taken a turn. Royal expert and author of Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles, Catherine Mayer, says that since the pair married, their world has been turned upside down.
Reminiscing on their wedding day, she writes: “To revisit these scenes is to peer down the wrong end of the telescope, the optimism of that day as distant as the moon, or at least California, where the Sussex’s have lived in exile since 2020.” She adds: “Scarcely a week passes without the press quoting anonymous sources to suggest that their union is fraying.”
At the time when the pair made their departure from the Royal Family, the late Queen Elizabeth said: “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
Since then, Prince Harry and Meghan have continued to live in the US, with their two children, Archie, seven and Lilibet, five.
In July, Prince Harry could make a trip to the UK, accompanied by Meghan and their two children.
The trip will mark one year to the start of the Invictus Games which will be held in Birmingham in 2027.
It will be the first time that Harry has visited the UK with his family in four years.
He has spoken previously about his desire to bring his two children back to his country of birth.
It is currently not known what the security arrangements for the trip will be or whether King Charles will meet with his son and grandchildren on the trip.
