Frome

I visited a quiet UK town with cobbled streets and independent shops—I’d move there tomorrow (Image: Getty)

The UK is full of beautiful towns and villages, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few. One thing that has always stood out to me is how different they all feel, even when they’re close to one another. Some are busy and modern, while others feel frozen in time. That’s exactly why I love exploring the UK, as you never know what to expect.

Frome in Somerset is one of those places that really sticks in your mind afterwards. It is not one of those big-name tourist towns like Bath or Wells, but that’s part of its charm. Tucked away in eastern Somerset near the Wiltshire border, Frome wasn’t high on my list to visit, but I’m so glad I did.

Frome, pronounced Froom, sits in a valley on the River Frome, about 13 miles from Bath. Historically, it grew as a wool and textile town, and you can still see traces of its past in the buildings and street layout today.

What made the town stand out to me was its mix of old and new, which appealed to virtually everyone.

There are winding medieval streets, Georgian terraces, and old industrial buildings alongside new cafes and independent shops.

It has always been a market town, and that tradition is still a big part of its identity, which is mainly why I decided to visit after seeing it on TikTok.

The standout event is the Frome Independent Market, held on the first Sunday of every month. The whole town centre basically transforms for the day.

Streets fill up with stalls selling everything from artisan food and breads to handmade crafts, antiques and clothes. There’s often music and street food too.

Even outside the big monthly market, there are smaller regular markets that keep that local feel going throughout the week.

Its high street has also been named as one of the best in the UK several times, and it was easy to see why.

Putting markets and shopping aside, one of the nicest parts of Frome is just walking around it. It's small enough to explore easily, but full of hidden gems to explore.

Catherine Hill is probably the most famous street in the town. It’s steep and cobbled with independent shops. But it’s also one of the best viewpoints, looking back over the rooftops of the town.

There’s also a strong arts and culture scene there. Galleries, studios and many creative spaces are scattered around the centre, and the Frome Festival in July brings the town to life with music.

If you fancy something quieter, there are plenty of riverside walks, as well as being far from open fields and rolling hills. The town is perfect for anyone and everyone.
